The 2026 BMW M5 represents a radical shift for the nameplate, as the seventh generation of this performance icon officially transitions into a high-performance plug-in hybrid. BMW has significantly streamlined the interior for this model by removing the traditional cluster of physical buttons used to individually tune the steering, engine, and suspension. These have been consolidated into a single Setup button on the centre console which opens a dedicated configuration menu on the curved digital display. Drivers still retain the M Mode button to toggle between Road, Sport, and Track settings, along with the signature red M1 and M2 steering wheel paddles for instant recall of saved presets.

Contrary to previous generations, the 2026 lineup doesn't currently feature separate Competition or CS (Clubsport) specifications. Instead, it's launched as a singular, high-output M Hybrid model available in both Saloon and Touring body styles.

In terms of its mechanical DNA, the M5 now bears some similarities to the BMW XM . Both vehicles share the same S68 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain and the ability to drive in a pure electric mode for roughly 40 miles, effectively blending the world of a silent commuter with that of a traditional V8 super-saloon.

Who's the ideal driver for a BMW M5 lease?

The typical M5 driver is someone who values understated power and technical sophistication. They're often professionals or long-distance commuters who want a car that can comfortably transport clients or family during the week but acts as a high performance sports car on the weekend. This driver prioritises effortless high-speed stability over the raw, lightweight agility of a sports car.
